Volunteer with GVI

Whether you are an experienced grower or completely new to farming, there is a place for you here. Volunteers are the backbone of what we do at GVI — from tending crops and building infrastructure to supporting events and sharing skills with our community. If you care about food justice, sustainability, and Bridgeport, we want to grow with you.

Ways to Get Involved

Farm Work Show up on a Friday or Saturday and get your hands in the soil. Farm volunteers help with seeding, transplanting, watering, weeding, mulching, composting, and general infrastructure upkeep. No experience needed — just come ready to learn and contribute.

Event Support GVI hosts community events throughout the season, including our Spring Kickoff and Harvest Fest. Event volunteers help with setup, outreach, day-of coordination, and fundraising support. Planning committee spots are also available for those who want to get more involved behind the scenes.

Skills-Based Volunteering Have a skill to share? We welcome volunteers with backgrounds in carpentry, photography, videography, administration, education, and more. If you have something to offer and want to put it to work for Bridgeport, reach out and let us know.

Drop-In Volunteer Hours

Individual volunteers and small groups are welcome without registration every Friday and Saturday from mid-April through mid-November, 9 AM to 2 PM at Reservoir Community Farm, 1469 Reservoir Avenue, Bridgeport CT.

Groups of 4 or more must contact us at least two weeks in advance to schedule a group volunteer day. Email info@gogvi.org to get started.

Before You Arrive — Volunteer Guidelines

Please review these guidelines before your first visit:

  • Closed-toe shoes with sturdy soles, long pants, and weather-appropriate layers are required. Spring and fall mornings can be cool even on warm days. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and any snacks or lunch you may need.

  • Reservoir Community Farm maintains active beehives on site. Volunteers with a known bee allergy must bring an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) or appropriate medication. Please let us know in advance so our team can be prepared.

  • Groups that include high school-age youth or younger require one adult chaperone for every five youth participants. Chaperones are expected to work alongside participants for the duration of the visit.

  • All volunteers must complete a waiver and release of liability before participating. Complete yours here before your first visit.
