Community Gardens

Green Village Initiative previously supported 12 Community Gardens that nourish the Bridgeport community. As our organization is in a period of transition, we are transferring management of the garden sites directly to the gardeners and offering them support to protect these places for community and urban growing.

More than 100 gardeners grow pesticide-free, fresh vegetables for their families’ tables, and these gardens are a primary source of fresh food in many neighborhoods.

2024 Community Gardens Applications Are Now Closed

Thank you to everyone who applied to be a community gardener in 2024! Our applications are now closed.

For those who applied, please be patient as our Community Garden Captains review applications and contact applicants. These captains are all volunteers, so sometimes reviewing and sorting applications can take a while.

If you didn’t get a chance to apply or if your application was not accepted due to a full garden, there are still ways you can get involved in growing in 2024!

Here are other ways you can get involved in urban farming and gardening with Green Village Initiative in 2024:

  1. Volunteer with us! We have open volunteer hours at Reservoir Community Farm (1469 Reservoir Avenue) every Friday and Saturday from 9am - 1pm. Find more information here: gogvi.org/reservoircommunityfarm.

  2. Join us for free urban farming and gardening workshops and educational events at Reservoir Community Farm! Subscribe to our newsletter and follow our social media pages at the links above to learn about upcoming events.

  3. Apply to be a community gardener again next year! Applications open in early Spring each year.

  4. Access our website’s resource pages to find more information about starting and maintaining your garden, accessing food in Bridgeport, and more!
