DARIEN
green village initiative
Darien GVI was founded in 2011 Our mission is to promote the greening of our community through local action, education and collaboration to make and sustain positive change. We seek to share information and collective inspiration with the existing Green Team of Darien, by facilitating a connection with like initiatives in neighboring towns. Darien GVI also serves as an incubator for fledgling projects in an attempt to leverage our knowledge, experience and man-power.
A coastal town located on Long Island Sound, Darien is mindful of the responsibility to protect the health of waterways and the surrounding environment. The group Choose to Reuse in Darien (CTR) was formed in response to the need for action, and seeks to prohibit the use of plastic shopping bags within Darien. Having succeeded with this effort in Westport, CT, the original GVI has been an invaluable source of information and guidance.
The Darien Edible School Garden Initiative (DESGI) seeks to facilitate the installation and incorporation of edible gardens into the Darien Public Schools and their curriculum. It is our belief that school gardens will foster better nutrition and health, a stronger sense of community, and a greater to connection to and respect for the Earth.
With the guidance of GVI, The DESGI is dedicated to providing both schools and educators with relevant resources and connections to existing programs in our neighboring towns and across the country. By identifying and organizing supportive parents, teachers and administrators, as well as securing both funding and development resources, DESGI intends to introduce school gardens to every school in our community.
